Scrooge (The Musical)

The mean spirited Ebenezer Scrooge (Albert Finney) is at his stingy ways once again in this 1970’s musical. The classic Dickens tale of A Christmas Carol is retold in song. Ebenezer Scrooge is once again visited by three Christmas ghosts, Past, Present, and Future. As they lead him through a magical journey we are all reminded of the beautiful joys and wonders of the Christmas spirit.

This is a great classic film I have been watching my entire life. I will admit I did not care for it much when I was younger, but over the years I have become quite familiar with it and the beautiful story it depicts. The songs are a little silly at times and the little boys have an outrageous accent, but other than that it is fairly enjoyable. It gets a wonderful message across and emits a wonderful fuzzy feeling in the end.

The acting was fun. You could tell the actors really had fun playing their rolls. Albert Finney, is an absolutely wonderful Scrooge. He is quite funny and his acting skills for this rolls were greatly appreciated. Alec Guinness is a hysterical Marley ghost. His over the top ghost acting was a great chuckle. The ghosts of Christmas Past and Present were outstanding as well. Their short portions of the film were incredibly entertaining. The entire support cast was outstanding really. Just all around fun acting.

The story and acting are both classic, but what really made this film outstand was the restoration! Paramount really outdid themselves restoring this film. I have never seen such a clean and beautiful restoration. The coloring and definition was outstanding. While watching the film originally I just noticed what a beautiful job they did and was quite taken back, but then I watched the original theatrical trailer and was blown away but the difference in quality. I can’t say enough about the quality of work Paramount has been turning out.

The picture isn’t the only thing improved. The sounds is also great. The voices are clear and crisp along with the musical aspects. The age of the film (1970) is hardly shown. It is a wonderful restoration all around.

Scrooge is by far one of the most impressive restorations I’ve seen. It is an absolutely outstanding high definition film. I really must recommend upgrading to Blu-ray when it comes to this film.
