Based on the true events of one woman’s life and death, Lionsgate debuts The Lena Baker Story on DVD, Digital Download and On Demand this winter. Executed in 1945, Lena Baker was the first woman to be sent to the electric chair in Georgia for the murder of her employer, who sold her into sexual slavery. The powerful film stars Tichina Arnold (TV’s “Everybody Hates Chris”) in a memorable role as Baker, and a supporting cast of Peter Coyote (E.T.) and Michael Rooker (The Bone Collector). Despite a difficult childhood and young adulthood, Baker (Arnold) has put her past behind her as she works to raise her family in 1930’s Georgia. But when she is called to work for Elliot Arthur (Coyote), a tyrannical white man, the two develop a highly charged relationship, filled with alcohol, cruelty and a troubling need for one another. Her employer’s abuse continues to escalate – often kidnapping Lena and keeping her from her family for weeks – and finally Baker makes a decision to fight back. Over the next few weeks and months, Lena makes headlines and is quickly found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by electrocution.
