The Apocalypse Cometh
Supernatural is an interesting show with a significant cult following. I actually haven’t seen much of the series before, so I was kind of thrown into this fifth season, which is apparently the most intense one to date. The reason? The imminent battle between Good and Evil and the whole apocalypse thing of course. These twenty-two episodes are packed with demonic hunting and drama leading up to the final battle.
Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles reprise their roles for the fifth time as Sam and Dean Winchester. Both actors turn in solid performances, too. The relationship in the show between these two brothers is nicely done and typical of a real brother relationship.
As for the release itself, this four disc set includes a nice full color booklet that provides a brief synopsis of each episode along with its air date. The booklet is helpful to show newcomers like me as well as fans of the show who want to track down that specific episode they may be searching for.
As for presentation quality, Supernatural Season 5 doesn’t disappoint. While I haven’t had the chance to watch a lot of TV shows on Blu-ray, Supernatural approaches movie quality in its image quality. The effects used in the show are also nicely done. Combined with a low amount of grain and lack of nearly any other technical issue, Supernatural Season 5 on Blu-ray looks pretty darn good. The 5.1 audio is as impressive.
I’m pleased to say that Warner didn’t skimp on extra features for this release. Here is a disc by disc breakdown of what to expect:
Disc 1: Producer/Writer Audio Commentary for the fourth episode, “The End”
Disc 2: Deleted Scene for “The Real Ghostbusters” (2m11s, SD)
Disc 3: None
Disc 4:
-Supernatural: Apocalypse Survival Guides: – An interactive feature that is viewed from the first person perspective. Viewers can watch various videos and other media related to supernatural beings, quite interesting.
-Gag Reel (10m18s, HD): It’s always funny to see such a serious show provide a gag reel in their extra features.
-Ghostfacers (31.5m, HD): Ten episodes of a spoof ghost chasing/searching show based in LA. This half hour feature, split across ten episodes, has the Ghostfacers team trying to locate a ghost in an old LA theater.
And that’s what you can expect for this fifth season of Supernaturals on Blu-ray.
