Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson has just learned hes the son of a god, Poseidon to be exact! As if that wasn’t big enough news, he’s being accused of stealing Zeus’ master lightning bolt. If the bolt is not returned in ten days Zeus will declare war on his brother, Poseidon. Percy is in a race against time as he is quickly forced to find himself and Zeus’ missing bolt. If he fails, it could mean the destruction of the world.

Book vs. Movie

As always, no movie is ever going to be a perfect reenactment of the book. There just isn’t enough time to detail and create a screen play to fit properly. There is also the small fact that sometimes it’s simply better to embellish. This particular film falls far from the book, but creates a much more entertaining storyline.

The film was targeted for an older audience than the book. This actually really works out well and catches a much larger viewing group. The constant action and movement is much more entertaining than the book itself, which is aimed at a younger crowd. Bits and pieces of the book were threaded together to create a somewhat similar feel, but nothing close to word for word. The switching up of story line and specific adventures makes for a more entertaining film. So, as far as the changes go from book to film, I’d have to say I rather enjoyed them.

A huge chunk of mythology is missing. It seems to be assumed you know your mythology. Well, not everyone does, and I can see why it would be hard to get into something you’re not all that sure about. There definitely should have been more information given to make the viewer a little more aware of characters. The book does a great job with the mythology lines, but the film is a little lacking on the Olympians.  So, if you were expecting a lot of mythology, you may be a little disappointed.

If you go into the film expecting the book you will be highly disappointed. However, if you go into it expecting nothing or having an open mind, you’ll more than likely be fairly pleased. It really was an entertaining film. The action was fantastic and the acting wasn’t half bad. The cast was amazing. Peirce Brosnan, Kevin Mckidd, Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Logan Lerman, Brandon T. Jackson, and Alexandra Daddario were all excellent choices! They really meshed well together and gave some great performances. They kept it light without being too ridiculous.

All in all I have to say I really enjoyed it. It was a funny and entertaining film. There really were no dull or slow boring parts. Not a big thinker just a light easy going film. I found it rather easy to sit through and enjoy the film. I would definitely recommend this film to anyone, especially for a family night. Its got something for everyone.

Beautiful Blu

I thought this film was beautiful! I loved the blue color scheme. It really put the emphasis on Percy being the son of Poseidon. The control of water makes for fantastic special effects. The droplets and waves were exciting to watch. The clarity and crispness of it all was really something to be impressed by. The surround sound really added to the huge water scenes where Percy shows off his stuff. You feel like youre right in the middle of all the action. It really is a great quality film.
