Impressions – Rage

id’s newest IP in over ten years is Rage. It was demoed for us today at the Bethesda booth.

It reminded me a lot of Borderlands, both in visual style and in gameplay, to a degree. Rage also feels like it has a splash of Bioshock in it too, but there’s no question that Rage still has an identity of its own, too.

The demo took place about three hours into the main campaign and saw the protagonist facing off against some bandits with a pistol. We were told that in addition to the main quest, there are many optional side missions that players can partake in by talking to various NPCs, like Crazy Joe from the demo.

Driving is a part of the game too and the demo included a buggy that our player used to take out several bandit vehicles.

There are multiple types of enemies in the game. Another area we were shown featured the ‘ghost’ variety, which are agile and fast. We also saw a more brute form with a knack for mechanical work and vehicles. I also got to see a machine gun and rocket launcher in game, both which functioned just as expected.

I can’t say a lot about Rage really surprised me,  but it’s very exciting to see id’s newest engine, idTech 5, in action, coupled with the fact that this is a new IP from a company that has yet to have a failure in their history. Details were sparse, but I think Rage is the best shooter of the show.
