Impressions – Ninety Nine Nights 2

If nothing else, Ninety Nine Nights 2 conveyed a fantastic sense of scale. Bashing giant hoards of bad guys is easy, but sidestepping the monotony that often goes with it is a bit trickier. The sequel to the 2006 original looks to solve this issue through a variety of maneuvers related to the combat engine. Using the face buttons for light and heavy attacks is a given, but holding the left trigger and then punching the face buttons results in four different, devastating magic attacks. The attacks are also bound to charging meters, which seems fair considering their power.

There was also another meter that, when filled, offered the option to execute an extremely powerful attack. Occasionally I would stumble upon an item in the field that would completely fill that meter, thereby allowing me to instantly execute some 100+ hit combos.

Mission structure was vague but consistent. At one point I was tasked with taking out three towers that were spawning enemies before eventually trying to topple a boss. Experience was gained for each enemy kill, so it didn’t necessarily pay to avoid them all, but there were so many of them. Spamming the boss with normal attacks and constantly dodging his giant pounding fists seemed to take a while until I realized my magic skills did far more damage, easily leading to a victory.
