Impressions – Homefront

THQ was showing off a new one from the developers of Frontline: Fuels of War behind doors today. Known as Homefront, the idea is that in the next twenty years, North Korea allies with South Korea and that alliance begins taking over the world. Homefront takes place in the US and has the Americans under heavy attack from the Koreans who launched a massive EMP from space before invading. During play, a map reveals that much of the central US is in a ‘radiation zone’ as well.

Played from a first person perspective, Homefront looks to combine the dramatic elements of something like Red Dawn (they even brought in the writer from that movie) with hardcore FPS action. We were shown one quiet sequence in which the players get to witness how Americans were surviving. You’ll meet several NPCs, including Conner, a tough, anti-Communist fighter with no patience.

Soon after we were shown a high intensity battle sequence. In it, the Americans surprise attacked the North Koreans and reclaimed an area. A lot of scripted events setup the action that allowed the player to snipe enemies and even command a Goliath vehicle. The Goliath is a four wheeled vehicle with rockets that also has a remote targeting system that you can use to quickly target enemy personnel. After targeting them, the Goliath will fire rockets at them.

I like the premise of Homefront, and it looks pretty cool, but it’ll have some stiff competition when it reaches store shelves. Check back with us for more coverage in the coming weeks.
