Impressions – Avatar The Last Airbender

I spent several minutes with the new Avatar game based off of the upcoming movie yesterday at THQ’s booth. Available soon for the Wii, the new Avatar game lets players control several different characters from the different Avatar nations, each with unique abilities. I played as the ‘blue’ character — apologies for forgetting his name.

The demo took place inside of what seemed like a temple. My character had the ability to sneak up to enemies by holding C, and finish them with a single quick kill strike, or I could attack normally utilzing dash, jump, and melee attacks.

Motion controls were kept pretty simple, which is good. Motion is used to execute finishing moves or to end a platforming sequence. Finishing moves look cool and are easy to perform as they simply require a quick swipe in a single direction. For platforming, after I had crawled across some vines to get over a bottomless gap, I had to flick the Wiimote to the right to get my character to hop off onto the other side.

I enjoyed the first Avatar game for the Wii a few years ago and I think I could find myself playing this one too.
