I got my hands on Super Scribblenauts today for a few minutes and was able to address many of the hopes/questions that I had about the game. First of all, right off the bat, the developer mentioned the improved controls. Though the touch screen controls still felt a little lax at times, I was thrilled to be able to pause the game and change to button controls at my desire and this immensely helped fix some of the problems with the first game.
Secondly, the adjectives were a great addition to the format, allowing for exponentially more permutations of objects. For instance, he recommended me create an “angry box”, which began to attack me. Thus, I countered the box with a “defensive dog” which killed the box. As for puzzle solving, there were a number of instances where the noun was obvious but the adjective was necessary. Thus, to make a man more like a dragon, I needed to feed him a “green potion” a “winged potion” and a “big potion.” Another example required me to create four different colored keys to unlock each of four doors. Though it seemed simple at first, I actually died the first time I tried because I didn’t notice a subtle age puzzle linked to each door. After trying again, I noticed four statues, each of which had a different stage in life and if I unlocked doors in the correct order from youngest to oldest, I received the Starite.
Finally, a hints system was added to the game allowing you to buy up to two other hints aside from the original one. This reminded us a lot of Professor Layton and helps to make some of the more menacing puzzles reasonably easy to solve. Overall, I was extremely excited about the additions to Super Scribblenauts and I feel that the developers have made the necessary improvements to make a more complete game than the original. See our gameplay video here or stay tuned for possibly more coverage of the rest of the levels.
