Who Is Deadliest (Not Including Chuck Norris of Course)
The nine episodes of season one all share at least one thing in common: they’re entertaining. While the debate between the results of each episode will never end, the show is at the very least captivating and entertaining. Some light history of each warrior and their weapons of choice are also examined which makes the show educational and further interesting. In case you’re wondering, the match ups you’ll see in season one are:
Apache Vs Gladiator, Viking Vs Samurai, Spartan Vs Ninja, Pirate Vs Knight, Yakuza Vs Mafia, Green Beret Vs Spetsnaz, Shaolin Monk Vs Maori Warrior, William Wallace Vs Shaka Zulu, IRA Vs Taliban. All tests are conducted in a large warehouse building and include tools to measure the destructive damage that each warrior can inflict with their weapons. Tests are divided into weapon types, including short, mid, and long range styles. Generally, each warrior has about five weapons total to demo. By collecting data from accelerometer’s and examining the damage done to ballistic test dummies, a winner is chosen for each category.
When all of the data has been collected and entered into a computer program, the program then runs 1,000 simulated fights. The viewers are treated to a re-enactment battle between the two warriors that’s pretty entertaining. Finally, a winner is chosen and that’s how each episode flows. For anyone interested in warriors, military history, or just curious about how historically impossible match ups might unfold, this is very enjoyable television.
On DVD
The Deadliest Warrior on DVD arrives in a standard three disc keep case. The label on each depicts a different warrior and the disc number. You’ll find extra features on every disc:
Disc 1:
-Season One Wrap-Up: A thirty-three minute interview session in which three of the main stars from the show are interviewed, including Max the computer programmer and two of his colleagues. They look back at the results and events that occurred during the first season.
-The Aftermath: Each episode includes a supplemental twelve to fifteen minute round table discussion about the results discovered in that episode. The three people being interviewed include one of the members of the winning team and two of the show’s resident experts. Questions submitted by viewers are answered and discussed.
Disc 2:
-Producer’s Roundtable: Two of the show’s producers and the prop master are brought in for a twenty-six minute interview in which they talk about the origin of the show, how it came to Spike TV, if there will be a second season, what their weapon of choice, and lots of other interesting Q&A.
-The Aftermath: Just like disc one, the second disc contains Aftermath discussions for each of its episodes.
Disc 3:
-The Aftermath: Disc three contains Aftermath interviews for its three episodes as well.
The extra features are actually all interesting to watch, which isn’t something you can say about most DVD sets, especially for TV shows.
As for the presentation, there’s nothing outstanding to say about Deadliest Warrior on DVD as this is a TV show on a standard definition medium. I think this show could have benefited more than some with high-def, thanks to the cool weapons and outfits that these warriors and their respective experts don. Still, the video and sound quality gets the job done and you’ll be too wrapped up in the show’s content to worry much about any minor technical issues you may notice.
With that, let’s get to the summary…
