Monsters, Inc.

Monsters, Inc.

In the city of Monstropolis, home to all sorts of interestingly creepy monsters, the central power company, Monsters, Inc., is supply scream energy to power the city. Monsters of all shapes and sizes hone their scare tactics to perfection and are sent into the rooms of sleeping children all over the world to harvest their screams.  Number one on the scare board, bringing in the most screams is James P. Sullivan Sulley(John Goodman). Hes a big, furry, blue and purple monster with teddy-bear like qualities that you just cant get enough of. His all too funny, and more than slightly odd assistant Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) is a short, one eyed, little round green guy who seems to be in some sort of trouble constantly. Together however, they make the perfect team and keep slimy, chameleon like Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi) out of the scream lead. Everything was glorious in Monstropolis until the unsuspecting Sulley accidently lets a human child named Boo out of her door and into Monsters, Inc., while investigating the sneaky Randall. In a frenzy to cover up the incident and evading the CDA to keep Boo safe, Sulley and Mike search for her door and a way to get her safely back to her world and keep them safely in theirs.

What a Scream

This is one of my absolute favorite Pixar films, and it is exactly that, a Pixar movie! Do I need to really say more about that?

After first watching the film in 2001 I didnt think it could get much better than it already was on DVD. Now going back and reviewing it, then watching it again on blu-ray, Im just ridiculously impressed. I truly dont think it could get any better. The transfer was perfection.

The film was astonishingly beautiful. The vibrant eye catching colors were extremely remarkable. The contrast between all the light and dark colors was very pleasing to the eye. Bold beautiful coloration, crisp, clean, edgy definition and attentive detail made the film a beautiful transfer.

Sound to put it very simply was Amazing. The background clarity was mystically remarkable. The scenes where Sulley and Mike are speaking while all the doors are opening and closing are perfection. There isnt a moments pause trying to decipher the speaking but at the same time the clarity of the doors opening and shutting and other little sounds all around is excellent. The energy surge when Boo laughs is really amazing. Her laugh just echoed all around the room and the base picked up on the power surge wonderfully.

The blizzard scene was bitterly cold and sounded perfect. The sound of the whirling wind and great detail of the storm were just another of the many scenes in which the film shined. It sounded like you were really sitting in the middle of a blizzard. The chilling wind could quite easily be equivalent a crisp howl of the wind outside.

I was very impressed with the use of all the different speakers. They were all worked over very well. From the tiniest oozing sloshing sound to the thundering footsteps of the giant monsters felt in the bass, it was easy to become absorbed with the film.

This is an excellent film for children and family alike. There are a few parts that could possibly scare a child but, it may also help them get over a fear of monsters in the closet.  Either way I think it is a great film and is very easy to love.
