The Ugly Truth

The Battle of the Sexes

Abby (Katherine Heigl) is a successful morning show producer who seems to be slightly challenged when it comes to romance. She wants nothing short of perfection and is determined to find it. When her new unwanted, truth spilling, TV star, Mike (Gerard Butler), joins the picture and offers to teach Abby everything she needs to know to get her guy. Things get hysterically interesting. However, things don’t exactly turn out the way either of them intended them to&

The Ugly Truth

I must say this was one romance comedy I would not call a chick-flick. It was a little different all the way around. Even the predictable romance plot was thrown askew by the raunchy adult humor. To my surprised I found out that my husband actually enjoyed watching it with me. It was sassy, sexy, and outrageous! There was an excellent balance of surprisingly crude comedy and playable romance to please anyone in the crowd.  There were very few moments you had time to give your sides a break.

The on screen chemistry between Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler was great! Heigl (27 Dresses) plays her roll extremely well, as she always does in her romance comedies, but Butler was a bit of a surprise. Its not what you would expect from the hardcore Spartan King in 300, but we all knew it was there after watching the wonderful P.S I Love You. They just did a terrific job playing out the rolls of two very strong characters.

The writers (Nicole Eastman & Karen McCullen Lutz) did a great job with the screen play. The lines were hilarious and the deliverance of those lines was marvelous. Robert Luketic (director of Legally Blonde) did a great job directing this film.  It couldn’t have been put together any better. The pace was excellent right from the beginning and the supporting cast, thou not seen much, was fantastic.  Cheryl Hines and John Michael Higgins were two very entertaining anchors on the morning show.  The plot was a fairly strong one. There were the overall predictable qualities of the classic romance comedy, yet there were all the wonderful new perspectives of getting those qualities across. The crude humor added by the male point of view, was very nice change of pace.

The films look was beautiful and the sound was fantastic.  There was nothing lacking on the quality. The film also had a great soundtrack featuring Pocket Full of Sunshine by Natasha Bedingfield, and Right Round by Flo Rida.

The special features were alright. There weren’t too many deleted or extended scenes, but there were some funny ones. The BD-Live was very neat thou. The real-time information on the cast, music, and trivia was really nice to be able to see while watching the film.

Overall I’d have to say it was a magnificent movie. If they keep making romantic comedies like this one, the male population is sure to get caught up in the romantics of it all!
