Transformers: Season 2 Volume 1

Transformers: Season 2 Volume 1

Growing up in the 80’s and early 90’s my generation was subjected to cartoons that were nothing more than advertisements to buy the toys. G.I. Joe, He-Man, Captain N: The Game Master and of course, The Transformers. So going back to visit my child hood by viewing the second season is a real treat.

The first half of the second seasons DVD Set contains 28 episodes, each episode 22 minutes long. All your favorites are there and hell you might even come across some you forgot about such as Brawny. There’s some great moments in the second season when you watch the series again with an adult perspective. There’s an episode where the Decepticons actually get drunk off of energon. Of course, this isn’t explained as getting drunk in the cartoon, but the Decepticons have just been over-energized. There’s also a great moment in the same episode where the Autobots are getting creamed, and Brawny actually says “The Autobots are getting pawned!” With dialogue like that makes me realize was “pawned” being used in a such a manner before Internet gaming culture?

As far as special features, there isn’t any to be found. At least I can’t find any on any of the four disks. But it’s all for not, as the second seasons has been restored to the best of their ability. Shout! has actually dug up the original masters to restore some animation that was actually cut in other releases of the second season of the Transformers. On top of restoring lost footage, any discoloration has been restored and remember those rare moments when Megaton would be talking and he’s saying Starscream’s lines? That has been fixed as well. Some might think this is a bad thing as it’s not how they remember it, but it’s a treat for those seeing the original series for the first time.
