The Proposal
On the verge of being deported, the pushy editor-in-chief Margaret Tate (Sandra Bullock) thinks quickly and declares she and her over used assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) are engaged to be married. Reluctantly Andrew accepts the proposal and agrees to marry her only if she agrees to a few of his own proposals. In an attempt to make the engagement look legit to a nosy immigration agent, Andrew and Margaret make their way to Sitka, Alaska to meet the family. An impromptu wedding sets the comedy into full swing as the couple attempt to pull of the scam of the year.
I’d say Yes
The casting for this film was spectacular. Each member brought a little special something to the film. Reynolds, with his witty delivery of lines and hysterical facial expressions will keep you laughing throughout the entire film. He makes the most simple of lines absolutely hilarious with seemingly little effort.
Bullock plays a fantastic control freak in need of serious unwinding. She may be lacking in comical luster compared to Reynolds, but is still quite funny and there isn’t enough to be said for how great she looks in this film. Her performance of Get Low (Lil Jon & The Eastside Boyz) was unforgettable! I don’t think that scene can be topped. (I had to watch it twice I was laughing so hard!)
When Golden Girl, Betty White was added to the mix playing Grandma Annie the comedy quickly became laugh out loud. White and her inappropriate humor are fantastic. She made a perfect quirky family grandmother who seems to continuously put you in those sticky situations with her off the wall comments.
This was definitely your classic romantic comedy. No real twists or turns in the plot. Very predictable, but that is to be expected of most romantic comedies. It is a very easy and light laugh, just don’t be expected to be blown away, even though there are some priceless scenes.
The scenery itself is something of a joy. The picture perfect mountains and lakes were breathtaking. Even thou it was shot in Rockport, MA this film will have you dreaming of heading to Alaska. The picture quality was unbelievably beautiful.
