Child’s Play

Not such a “Good Guy” after all

The film begins when serial killer Charles Lee Ray (Brad Dourif) is cornered and shot in a Chicago toy store by Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) after being left behind by his partner.  Dying, he is forced with the choice of death or “reincarnation.”  Casting an ancient voodoo spell, Ray places his soul in a nearby “Good Guys” doll becoming known as “Chucky.”

Six year old Andy (Alex Vincent) receives a Good Guys doll for his birthday from his mother Karen Barclay (Catherine Hicks.) Unfortunately, she is forced to work an extra shift leaving Andy home with a babysitter and Chucky starts behaving badly.

Using Andy as transportation and cover, Chucky sets out to seek his revenge on Detective Norris and his ex-partner.  After being discovered by Karen Barclay, the hysterically determined mother hell bent on protecting her child, Chucky over powers Mom and is on the run.

After discovering he is turning human, Chucky must find and enter the first person he revealed himself to, six year old Andy, or ultimately be forced to live out the rest of his days in the body of the doll. Now, with an impending deadline Chucky is out for murder with a vengeance.

The Verdict

Here you have a great almost horror film with passionate characters, a doll with super strength and speed, and overall laughable creepy horror. It’s a great film that scared me to death as a child and is still giving me chills every time a check out a crazy looking doll that can talk. It’s just not quite giving off the same scary vibe these days.

Catherine Hicks was wonderful playing the role of Karen Barclay. She pulls off the half crazy, very concerned and determined mother very well. Alex Vincent also played a very impressive role of the terrified young Andy Barclay. Chris Sarandon also played the unbelieving detective very well. The car victim scene was probably the best on in the movies.

However, this film is very unbelievable. The concept of a doll overpowering adult humans is a little over the top.  It’s just a doll! Chucky shouldn’t be able to out run or overpower anyone in this film, but manages to do it on several occasions.  Although, I must say some of those scenes were the most thrilling and memorable. The only other thing that may have made the movie a little better was more of a background story on Charles Lee Ray.  He is made out to be a renowned serial killer but not much else is talked about.  Possible more murdering, since it is a horror film, would have been nice, and maybe a more detailed plot would have made it more enjoyable. Overall, I’d say it was a good film that looks and sounds excellent in Blu! Yes, very unbelievable but still fun to watch.
