On the Case
This well packaged four disc set includes thirteen mysteries spanning just shy of eleven hours of content. British actors such as Peter Vaughan, John Neville, Donald Sniden, Donald Pleasence, and Jeremy Irons are featured in this collection. There are almost as many detectives as there are episodes in this set, their tactics and characters varying significantly. The episodes and their detectives in this set are:
Disc 1:
-A Message From the Deep Sea – Dr. Thorndyke
-The Missing Witness Sensation – Max Carrados
-The Affair of the Avalanche Bicycle & Tire Co. Ltd – Horace Dorrington
-The Duchess of Wiltshire’s Diamonds – Simon Carne and his alternate persona, Klimo
Disc 2:
-The Horse of the Invisible – Carnacki
-The Case of the Mirror of Portugal – Horace Dorrington
-Madame Sara – Dixon Druce
Disc 3:
-The Case of the Dixon Torpedo – Jonathan Pryde
-The Woman In the Big Hat – Lady Molly
-The Affair of the Tortoise – Martin Hewitt
Disc 4:
-The Assyrian Rejuvenator – Romney Pringle
-The Ripening Rubies – Bernard Sutton
-The Case of Laker, Absconded – Martin Hewitt
Summaries of these mysteries can be found with a quick Google search. I have yet to watch all of these mysteries, but as a fan of British mysteries, especially Poirot, I found these to be mostly appealing. They can be dry and induce sleep, and their production values aren’t as high as most American TV shows, but the quality of the content is still very good.
As for extra features, each disc includes a basic profile of the detective and their creator. Presentation-wise, these publicly aired episodes are in full screen and look and sound just fine.
