The Film
How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days is the name of a new article that Kate Hudson’s character, Andie, is writing for an up and coming women’s magazine named Composure that is based in New York. She decides to find a guy, get together with him, and then see if she can drive him nuts within ten days, making him dump her. She meets Matthew’s character, Ben, at a formal gathering. Matthew is in marketing exec who wants to score a big contract — to do so, he places a bet that he can make a woman fall in love with him in ten days. The two intentions clash, and romantic comedy ensues as Andie does everything in her power to anger Ben while Ben rolls with the punches and continues to try to court Andie.
Obviously, both characters are in it for their own personal gain and are just trying to play the other, but they both realize that underneath all of the theatrics, they each do have real feelings for each other. The nearly two hour film is at least on par with most other romantic comedies, but if you’re not a fan of the genre, you may find it a bit too contrived. As far as the acting goes, both Kate and Matthew are veteran Hollywood actors and they do very well.
Presentation & Extras
The movie does alright for itself, but how are the image and sound quality? They’re about what you would expect for such a relatively recent film (2003). Also, with no special effects or anything extraordinary, 10 Days is a very plain looking film, not that there’s anything wrong with that. In terms of raw image quality, it’s good; there are some light grain issues at times, but overall it looks quite good. The Dolby TrueHD audio is more than capable enough for this primarily dialogue driven film.
For extras, there are several, including three in HD. The extras are:
-Audio Commentary with Director Donald Petrie
-How To Make A Movie In 2 Years (HD, 15m) – This feature is an interview with the two women that wrote the book. They tell their story about how they came up with the idea and how it got turned into a movie, etc.
-Why the Sexes Battle (HD, 5m) – A couple of experts in psychology talk about why men and women are competitive towards one another, etc…much like the other extras, it’s worth a one time watch, maybe.
-Girls Night Out (HD, 15m) – Another segment with the authors of the book the film was based off of, nothing very interesting here.
-Music Video: “Somebody Like You,” by Keith Urban (SD, 4m)
-Deleted Scenes with Optional Director Commentary – A handful of scenes in SD.
