Impressions: God of War III

God of War III… probably going to be my personal game of the year for 2010 when it releases in March. We have already posted the HD demo video we filmed on the floor yesterday at this location, but I also got a chance to play through a lot of the demo myself today at a booth meeting we had with Sony.

Frankly, there really isn’t a lot to say about GoW III — it’s going to be incredible, no one has any doubt of that. The game will close out the story that has been built up over the other three GoW games. Kratos is after the Gods this time around to finally reap the vengeance he seeks. A powerful set of gauntlets acts as a new weapon for Kratos. Up unti today, I thought the gauntlets were a close combat weapon only; however, if you hold L1 and press a face button, he can actually use them at some range (less than the Blades of Chaos however) as they have chains attached to them. Kratos can also grab a grunt and use him as a battering ram against other grunts too, as you have probably seen now in several different videos.

Of course, the visuals and epic nature of God of War III is clear; gorgeously visceral and vibrant, GoW III jumps off the screen with an intensity unmatched by anything I have seen. The pounding orchestral score adds, as always, tremendously to the atmosphere.

Bottomline, even though it’s a sequel and even though it isn’t coming out in 2009, God of War III is my pick of the show for 2009.
