The Best of Star Trek The Next Generation

The Best of Star Trek The Next Generation

Four the Best From One of the Best

Most Sci-Fi fans agree that The Next Generation was one of televisions absolute best sci-fi shows during the course of its seven year run. On this new Paramount DVD release, fans and newcomers alike can enjoy four of the show’s best episodes. If you’re on the fence about waiting until the Next Gen comes to Blu-ray or are a collector, or just haven’t seen the show before — you might find this release to suit your needs.

The episodes on this release are: The Best of Both Worlds (Part I and Part II), Yesterday’s Enterprise, and The Measure of A Man. Let’s take a closer look at each:

The Best of Both Worlds Part I – The Borg are in hot pursuit of the Enterprise, and are able to capture Picard and assimilate him. Under the direction of Riker, the Enterprise has a chance to destroy the Borg Cube, but at the cost of also killing their Captain.

The Best of Both Worlds Part II – Captain Riker is able to outwith the Borg and gives the Enterprise and her crew a chance to rescue Picard. Picard, still in his Borg state, is able to give the crew of the Enterprise a clue that might help save not only him, but Earth from the Borg.

Yesterday’s Enterprise – A brilliant time-space continuum episode that sees two versions of the Enterprise at the same time.

The Measure of A Man – Data’s existence is at stake in a battle over his rights after a robotics specialist at a Starbase attempts to convince Picard to allow him to take Data apart. Riker and Picard square off in this battle over Data’s rights after Picard calls for a hearing on the matter.

As with the Original Series DVD release I just reviewed, these are four fine episodes from a classic, long running series. However, they really only serve a niche market though, as most folks either will have rented or purchased the DVDs, or are like me and are just waiting patiently for the Blu-ray release.

Presentation And Conclusion

All episodes are presented in 4:3 with a standard 5.1 audio track. There isn’t anything outstanding about the presentation quality, but at the budget price I wasn’t really expecting anything more than the most basic transfer. That said, there are also no extra features to speak of.

Let’s get to the summary…
