A classic romance tale set in feudal Japan, this story follows the fall of Mimura, his young, determined wife, and is observed throughout by their noble servant Tokuhei. When the lord hears of Mimura’s loyalty, he originally decrees that a yearly stipend be granted his household for the service of saving his life. Unfortunately, rumor and ill-intent begin to invade their troubled existence, bringing the harsh realities of life into their home. With Mimura lost in his despair and believing himself unworthy of living, Kayo must accept help from a disreputable source. When his gossip-spreading aunt brings word of his wife’s actions, Mimura shamefully casts his wife out, determined to maintain what pride he has left.
Naturally, despite casting her out, Mimura’s heartfelt feelings for her lead him to attempt revenge on her behalf, and in regaining some of his former fighting abilities, he slowly regains honor in his own life. When the final confrontation is approaching, Mimura’s true feelings of love and honor will be tested to the core.
Beautifully acted and skillfully filmed, this film is truly moving. I particularly appreciate the careful addition of computer-generated elements to certain scenes, as their presence makes the visual placement more perfect and they are never overused. There is every reason for the 13 Japanese Academy Award Nominations awarded to this film.
