Can’t Hardly Wait: 10 Year Reunion Edition

Can’t Hardly Wait: 10 Year Reunion Edition

The 10 year reunion edition—did we actually talk like that?! Have Guns ‘n Roses really gone out of style? And have we truly aged all that much? I mean, peep this!

The biggest party of the year has just gotten better–Amanda Beckett is single!! This is fantastic news for Preston, whose love-at-first-sight-angst has been unrequited for four long years. Word is spreading quickly that Amanda (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has been dumped by herjock boyfriend in preparation for college, and Preston (Ethan Embry) is hoping to seize this golden opportunity to give her an amorous letter revealing his true emotions. His best gal pal, Denise (Lauren Ambrose), feigns disgust with the whole party idea and with high school dating in general, but could it be that she’s got a thing for her childhood friend Kenny (Seth Green)? Meanwhile,a nerd (Charlie Korsmo) seeking revenge has plotted to overtake the jock, put him to sleep, and take inappropriate photographs. Oh, how the mighty will fall and the weak will rise to the occasion! It’s the everyman dream—regular kids outshining the presumed celebrities of the halls. Even Jerry O’Connell makes a cameo as a college freshman returning to instill wisdom into his younger brethren before they do something stupid—like dumping their girlfriends to prep for college co-eds.

Why ya’ll gotta waste my flava?! Damn!!

While this film is no “Breakfast Club,” it has some merit as a lighthearted teen comedy. The stereotypes are all in place and the underdogs have their day…and that’s about it. If you’re looking for intense plot, keep surfing. However, the lighthearted laughs and happy endings make this a movie worth watching at least once. The performances are classic—Seth Green will keep you laughing (and quoting him) for hours, and Ethan Embry has a fine performance as a sincere worshipper-from-afar. While Melissa Joan Hart’s supporting role is a little over the top, so were a few of the girls in my high school. (Go team Teen Movie!) Jennifer Love Hewitt is doing what she does best—maintaining the center of attention with little dialogue and classic hair swishing. No flava wasted here—if nothing else, you can see where it all started for several current stars.

Special Features—definitely check out the “You Know You’re 90’s If” section—ah, memories. Rachel haircuts, Zach Morris crushes, and Crystal Pepsi are just a few of the plethora of pop culture references to keep the nostalgia going. (Seriously, when is Crystal Pepsi coming back??)
