Chrono Trigger Revived for Nintendo DS

Chrono Trigger Revived for Nintendo DS

Talk about a week filled with amazing announcements.  First we got Mega Man 9, then it was Diablo III, and now here comes yet another blockbuster on the way: Chrono Trigger Revived for Nintendo DS.

Sure, it’s just a remake of the original with some added content, but have you any idea how giddy this makes us old-school Squaresoft fans?  For many, Chrono Trigger was the epitome of creativity for 90’s gaming.  It was developed by a so-called Dream Team which included such storied contributors as Akira Toriyama, Hironobu Sakaguchi, Nobuo Uematsu, and the newcomer composer (and now highly respected) Yasunori Mitsuda, who reports having come down with an ulcer after his relentless work on completing the game’s soundtrack.  It was also among the first games to feature many different dynamic endings, some of which were truly bizarre.  This game is truly a defining point in the history of role-playing games and to see it brought to life once more on the ubiquitous Nintendo DS also gives us hope that Square might be considering another installment in the future.

Anyhow, for now, we wait.  The game is expected to grace Japan later this year, though elsewhere we probably will not see it until 2009.  But let me be the first to say that I’m thrilled at the prospect of playing through yet again for the umpteenth time, hopefully now to discover additional content.
