Uncle Drew by Summit Entertainment was an overall cheesy, feel good comedy. The plot lines were predictable, but everything felt real and had some overall good emotion to it. Throughout the movie, you were always rooting for the good guy Dax (Lil Rel Howery) and Uncle Drew (Kyrie Irving). As for the basketball aspect of the movie it felt more like the Harlem Globetrotters than NBA players, with flashy moves and crazy dunks. However, that was not a negative, if anything it added to the overall thrill and experience of the movie.
Let’s “ball” right into what was the overall plot line of Uncle Drew. Dax, the main star, spent his life savings trying to get his baseball team into a Harlem tournament. Having lost his squad to his archrival, played by Nick Kroll, Dax must find a new team to compete. Dax hears about a local legend named Uncle Drew and searches for Drew and his legendary team. The rest of the movie plays out by tracking down the rest of Uncle Drew’s team and the struggles they must overcome to play in the Basketball tournament. The rest of the movie you can figure out even without watching it. Even with this all-star basketball cast and predictable, the acting was a plus of the film.
When thinking of NBA and WNBA players as actors and actresses, one would not expect this to be a high caliber film. However, I was pleasantly surprised when the movie delivered good acting mixed with even better comedy. Some of the one-liners and deep emotion problems felt like award-winning actors expressing the deepest emotions they could. When thinking retrospectively, most of the actors and NBA/WNBA players had relatively small rolls. The main stars Where Kyrie Irving and Lil Rel Howery. Shaquille O’Neal (Big Fella) and Chris Webber (Preacher) played great supporting roles and added exciting storyline that could have been explored more.
So, you may be asking how was the make-up, considering most of these players are much younger than the characters they played. Well if you look at the behind the scenes features, you can tell that hours of work when into transforming these actors into the old characters they played. However, the makeup felt a bit cartoonish, and you could tell that these people were not as old as they were portrait. However, I think that this was a strength of the movie because it added to the overall comedy of the film. To go along with the makeup, the costumes were hilarious in being portrait as stereotypical older people wearing high waters and sweaters. Constantly walking around like they had been cryogenically frozen for the past 100 years and then hitting the court like NBA stars.
Overall there are not many bad things to say about Uncle Drew. This isn’t a great movie, but it is a feel-good comedy with decent acting and funny parts. The overall story is very easy to see almost from the get go and you are happy the way the movie comes out. There are a lot of good lessons to be learned from this movie that break up some of the serious and funny parts. I would easily watch this movie again and enjoy every second of it. The characters had decent development and makeup. The shining start was the storyline and surprisingly good acting.
