13 reasons why is a riveting story about teen suicide that portrays what the emotional toll would be like through the perspective of a high schooler. 13 reasons why starring Dylan Minette, Katherine Langford, Christian Navarro, and Alisha Boe is a netflix original tv show about a girl who takes a boy on a journey through her past. After killing herself, Hannah Baker(played by Katherine Langford) sends her old best friend Clay Jensen(played by Dylan Minette) a series of mixtapes. Clay has to listen to these mixtapes and trace the broken past that led Hannah to killing herself.

The soundtrack to this movie is phenomenal. What I would consider is the “main song” of the movie “the night we met” by Lord Huron is placed extremely well as a plot point in 13 reasons why. Overall the soundtrack works with the plot and that is very pleasing.

The lighting in 13 reasons why helped establish the tone of the film. In scenes with Hannah the lighting was very warm. In scenes where she didn’t exist it was a cold blueish hue. This is a very subtle way of establishing the mood and it is ingenious.

The perspective from a high schooler in the tv show was accurate. As a high schooler it is scary and unthinkable to get a parent involved in fear of repercussion. The plot stays mainly within high schoolers and it provides a interesting viewpoint.

At some points the plot felt overdramatic. It is hard to judge this unfortunately because it is somewhat fitting for the plot. A complaint would be that the way the actors dramatized the situation felt a bit much and could be jarring.

The ending of 13 reasons why was a negative for the tv show that held it back. It seemed forced and contrived which gave the tv show a unrealistic tone. The ending felt like it was designed to provide writing material for the second season.

13 reasons why is a worthwhile mature teen drama. The storyline will keep you interested with twist and turns that provide a strong emotional punch. Some scenes feel overdramatized but that doesn’t take away from the plot. A poor ending designed to push a plot for season 2 was disappointing but if season 2 turns out to be better than the first it will be justified.
