For all of its gifts to gaming, it's a shame James Cameron's Aliens has never birthed a great videogame. There have been a few earnest attempts, most involving Predator(s), but Aliens aches for a defining moment - something akin GoldenEye 007 or Escape from Butcher Bay - to understand its influence and realize its potential. Aliens: Colonial Marines, in some phase of development for over five years at Gearbox Software and a handful of other studios, desperately wants to be that game. Billed as a canonical follow-up to Aliens, it seeks to engulf the player in sights and sounds from the 1986 classic. Colonial Marines sure looks and sounds the part, but only by playing its part could it break the cycle of pedestrian Aliens games.

Few debuts on Sony's PlayStation Portable were as instantly arresting as Patapon. Sandwiched in the middle of their 2007 E3 montage, the teaser was short on context but high on appeal. Its 2D presentation was entirely unique while its gameplay, as we would soon discover, was a concept all its own. Patapon was a rhythm/action game where the player controlled a tribe of warriors by inputting short button sequences that not only had to correspond with commands, but also blend into the beat of the music. Upon release it was one of the most legitimately innovative titles of the current generation, and nearly four years later there still isn't much else like it. Except, of course, more Patapons. The problem with success is it often results in demand for a sequel while completely ignoring whether or not one was needed. Katamari Damacy has struggled to innovate upon its basic concept while Bioshock 2's narrative contributions were looked upon as wholly unnecessary. They're still great games, but purveying sense of familiarity pulsing through every vein didn't have the punch of their prequel's arresting (there's that word again) debuts. Patapon 3's fate isn't too different. ...

Big open world RPGs scare me. I'm one of those gamers that likes to fully investigate the game world, explore all the different endings and avenues of reaching the ending, and this genre can be a total 'time vampire' if you will. I'm easing into it though, having recently played Arcania and most recently I've been playing through Two Words II from Reality Pump, Topware Interactive, and published by Southpeak. While Two Worlds II won't blow the doors off of the genre or seriously compete with the big boy franchises from Bethesda or Bioware, if you have even a casual interest in RPGs, I suggest you give Two Worlds II a serious look.

I haven't played a racing title as exciting and addictive as Split/Second in a long time. I've always been more of an arcade racer than a sim one, although I can certainly find enjoyment in both. I thought NFS: Shift did a nice job of blurring the lines between the two, but not since Burnout: Paradise have I really gotten to sink my teeth into a serious arcade racer until Split/Second.

My experience with skateboarding games is frankly thin, with my most recent virtual grind session coming from Tony Hawk: Ride. While troubled on many levels, I appreciated Ride for its interactive but very frustrating controller. But this isn't about ride. This is about Skate 3, the third title in EA and Black Box's series in as many years. Having not played Skate before, I was coming into 3 a total noob.

Somewhere between DLC and sequel lies a certain type of release that always begs the question: is it worth it? Capcom's Street Fighter series is no stranger to such releases and their latest offering is an expanded version of Street Fighter IV. With ten new characters, new stages, new onlines modes and many other gameplay additions, Super Street Fighter IV takes the best fighting game from last year and expands upon it -- setting it up to most likely be the best fighter of 2010, and all for $40.
