Star Trek

It's a big month for Star Trek, with the release of TNG S03 on Blu-ray, the new JJ Abram's film in theaters, and a videogame. I can tell you the TNG Blu-ray is amazing; I haven't seen the new movie yet obviously, but I bet it's a better value than the new game.

Is Rebellion's return trip to the good old gaming days of World War 2 shooters and occult-powered Nazi enemies, painted with a modern coat of glossy graphics and third-person gameplay, a nostalgia-filled trip of fun and adventure or does it, like a poorly-sighted sniper, miss its mark?

In 2006, Sony Pictures and MGM decided that the James Bond character needed a reboot, as the tale of a gadget laden, smooth talking secret agent had gone stale. They went back and explored Ian Fleming's first short story on the character in a tale called Casino Royale. Determined not to water him down with gadgets, catchy one-liners and a cavalier attitude, they built up a raw individual and broke him down. What came out of that process was a grittier, focused and deadly James Bond that is unlike any previous iteration of the character. And people absolutely loved him. Tomb Raider followed the same path as James Bond.

Back in March, I called Ninja Gaiden 3 the "Phantom Menace" of the series. Updated for the Wii U, NG3: Razor's Edge is like the Sigma releases for the other NG games -- it offers a variety of tweaks and balances and some significant new new content. Second time the charm?

Darksiders II
Hot
Darksiders II thoroughly impressed me just three months ago when I reviewed it for the PS3, but playing it again on the Wii U has been even more enjoyable thanks to smart Gamepad integration.

Don't worry, Michael Bay didn't have anything to do with this game. From Activision and High Moon Studios comes the follow up to '10s War for Cybertron with more twitchy third person bullet spraying. Solid campaign principles linked with a sturdy online component make this a really fun excursion into the "in disguise" universe.
